Brunswick Chamber Lunch and Learn: Legal Checklist for Success as You Grow Your Business

October 22, 2014

On October 16, Dave Burkoff and Sarah Lamar presented a Lunch and Learn at the Brunswick/Golden Isles Chamber of Commerce titled Legal Checklist for Success as You Grow Your Business. The event was co-sponsored with the Chamber and the UGA Small Business Development Center, and is part of a series of Legal Lunch and Learns that HunterMaclean will present at the Brunswick Chamber in 2014 and 2015.

The presentation was designed for new business owners and managers, as well as for leaders of more established businesses ready to move their organizations forward.

Dave Burkoff presented an overview of business structure, agreements, and liabilities, including agreements that every business owner should consider putting into place, how to strengthen existing agreements, distinctions between types of business entities, fiduciary obligations, antitrust considerations, protecting sensitive information, how to address disputes when they inevitably arise, and how to best guard against liability in the first place.

Sarah Lamar presented an overview of employment law applicable to any sized business. She addressed the laws relating to independent contractor relationships and the numerous employment laws at both the federal and state level, emphasizing the need to train employees and document performance and conduct issues. Sarah also reviewed the various government agencies with which employers may have to work such as the EEOC, US and GA DOL, ICE, and OFCCP.
