Savannah attorney T. Mills Fleming has been named winner of the State Bar of Georgia’s 17th Annual Justice Robert Benham Award for Community Service for the state’s District 1.

The award from the bar and the Chief Justice’s Commission on Professionalism will be presented Feb. 23 at the Georgia Bar Center in Atlanta.

It was created in 1998 by then-chief justice Benham and others amid concerns that a decreasing number of the state’s lawyers were active in leadership positions in public and community services.

The award recognizes lawyers who continue to value the tradition of community service and who measure their success in ways other than financial gain.

Fleming is a partner in the HunterMaclean firm where he concentrates on health care, immigration issues and is chair of the firm’s health care practice group.

“Mills is an invaluable resource to the greater Savannah community,” said HunterMaclean managing partner Frank S. Macgill. “His expertise and commitment are evident on his distinguished legal career and in his dedication to nonprofit institutions.”

Among Fleming’s community pursuits:

  • Past board chairman for Bethesda Academy and Telfair Museum
  • Board member, past president Lucas Theatre for the Arts
  • Board member, the Savannah Voice Festival, Savannah Philharmonic
  • Past board member Savannah Music Festival, Rape Crisis Center, Chatham County Court Appointed Special Advocates
  • Past board chairman, Memorial Health University Medical Center Foundation
  • Fundraising efforts for Savannah Country Day School and the Jewish Educational Alliance

Fleming joins past local Benham Award winners who include Chatham County Assistant Public Defender Christopher Middleton, Chatham County Superior Court judges James Bass Jr. and Louisa Abbot, Circuit Public Defender Michael Edwards, and Georgia Legal Services attorney Wanda Andrews.
