Patrick Barkley is a partner in HunterMaclean’s litigation group whose practice focuses on business litigation, admiralty, real estate disputes, and transportation and logistics matters. He regularly represents clients in a variety of insurance defense matters ranging from slip-and-falls and premises liability actions to trucking accidents. Patrick further has experience representing Protection and Indemnity Clubs, domestic marine insurers, ship owners, and ship charterers in connection with maritime personal injury claims, collisions, bill of lading disputes, and cargo damage claims.
As part of Patrick’s real estate litigation practice, he represents businesses and individuals in condemnation matters, boundary and easement disputes, landlord-tenant disputes, and ad valorem property tax appeals against county Boards of Assessors. Patrick has successfully handled hundreds of property tax appeals in the Boards of Equalization and superior courts of southeast Georgia involving residential, commercial, industrial, personal, historic rehabilitated, and special classes of tax-exempt properties.
Patrick is admitted to practice in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit; the U.S. District Courts for the Middle, Northern, and Southern Districts of Georgia; and all courts of the State of Georgia.
Patrick earned his bachelor’s degree in Business Management from Auburn University before earning his J.D. from Samford University’s Cumberland School of Law, where he was awarded multiple Scholar of Merit awards and served as a Judge Abraham Caruthers Teaching Fellow and as an articles editor for the American Journal of Trial Advocacy. Originally from Dalton, Georgia, Patrick began his career as an associate at a well-respected firm in his hometown before transitioning to Savannah to focus on business-related matters. For consecutive years, Patrick has been recognized by his peers in Georgia Super Lawyers as a “Rising Star” in the field of business litigation and has further been recognized by Best Lawyers as “One to Watch” in the area of transportation law.
Lead trial counsel in successful representation of a non-vessel operating common carrier in setting aside a warehouse lien wrongfully asserted by an international shipping and logistics company.
Defense of a multinational roofing company in a complex breach of warranty and products liability action leading to favorable settlement.
Obtained summary judgment in favor of large marine carriers in multiple personal injury actions brought by longshoremen.
Secured numerous judgments over $100,000, including client attorney’s fees, for a regional fuel supplier in the southeastern United States.
Defended numerous transportation and trucking companies in successfully resolving personal injury claims brought against the companies, their employees, independent contractors, and/or owner-operators for damages arising out of motor vehicle accidents.
Assisted in obtaining a defense verdict on behalf of a police officer of the Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department in a tortious interference with business relations, trespass, wrongful arrest, and 42 U.S.C. § 1982 rights lawsuit after a lengthy jury trial.
Representation of taxpayers in Chatham, Glynn, Liberty, Bryan, and Effingham counties in ad valorem property tax appeals involving residential, commercial, historic rehabilitated, and personal property.
Successfully represented buyer in the acquisition of a cleaning and restoration company, including negotiation, financing, and transfer of franchise licenses.
Assists in the representation of all fourteen member Clubs of the International Group of Protection and Indemnity Clubs, providing their ocean carrier members legal advice, casualty investigation, regulatory assistance, and related services for legal matters arising in the Port of Savannah and the Port of Brunswick.
